Considering Happiness and Well-Being in Holistic, Sustainable Development

Recently the UN released a web cast on the High Level Panel Discussion on Happiness and Wellbeing.  Friends of Humanity President and Founder, Graziella Zanoletti attended a high-level meeting on behalf of FOH partner Alice Project.

The meeting focused on redefining a new economic paradigm. Organized by the Permanent Mission of Bhutan to the UN Headquarters, the meeting worked toward creating ways  to support holistic, sustainable development. The Kingdom of Bhutan wants governments to focus on using new ways to measure national success. Using GDP as a measure leaves out a far more important factor of national success--the well-being of people. Sustainability and the well-being of people must ultimately be at the core of development for all nations.

The opening meeting was chaired by Helen Clark, the administrative coordinator for UN Development Programmes and led by a high level pannel including the Secretary-General of the UN, the President of the General Assembly, the Prime Minister of Bhutan, the President of Costa Rica, the President of the UN Economic and Social Council

UN Secretary General, Ban Kai-moon remarked, "We need everyone – government ministers and policy makers, business and civil society leaders, and young people – to work together to transform our economies… to place our societies on a more just and equitable footing… and to protect the resources and ecosystems on which our shared future depends. Connecting the dots between these issues -- between water, food and energy security, climate change, urbanization, poverty, inequality and the empowerment of the world’s women – lies at the heart of sustainable development."

Friends of Humanity remains committed to supporting these values and pursuing holistic solutions for sustainable development.
